The Miz finally took a step forward and became WWE Intercontinental champion on the 1,000 episode of Raw, defeating Christian. After a series of set backs, The Miz has redeemed himself, giving his fans hope that this is a sign of things to come. The Miz has always been entertaining, but as Intercontinental champion, he can certainly make things interesting on Raw, in his own way. Let the good times roll!
Given the opportunity, The Miz can do what Cody Rhodes did for the title when he won it, restoring the belt to it’s former glory and making it one of the most prestigious in the company. He’ll definitely do more for the Intercontinental title than what Santino Marella is currently doing for the United States title. Santino, despite being a good wrestler, is at best comedy relief and hasn’t done anything to elevate the belt. The U.S. title has lost it’s luster, unfortunately, and should be retired if and when the WWE doesn’t give a damn anymore about it.
That certainly is not the case with The Miz and the Intercontinental title. Together they make a great combination. The Miz can be red hot and have an even better run then he did with the WWE Championship. Hopefully, WWE Creative has learned from their prior mistakes with both The Miz and the belt and are ready to help give both the credibility that they deserve.
I can’t help but compare The Miz to The Honky Tonk Man. The longest reigning Intercontinental champion in history, Honky Tonk, like Miz, was more charismatic than anything else. No one took him seriously, yet despite his lack of wrestling talent he became the man, just like The Miz has. His reign as champion was red hot, and he faced the likes of Randy “Macho Man” Savage and Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat. There’s no reason why the same can’t be said about The Miz, when we look back years from now.
This is a great example of how both an athlete and the title he wears can elevate each other’s stock immensely. It’s been a little over a year since The Miz held the WWE Heavyweight Championship. Although he managed to maintain a strong presence at times, the big question was where did The Miz go wrong? Too many setbacks and failures made fans wonder if there was any coming back for him. The Miz knew better. He had to endure and wait for this chance.
Love him or hate his guts, The Miz’s run as Intercontinental champion will be something we’ll all be talking about.
